NB’s tutoring/mentoring program aims to improve academic growth and success and social skills for at-risk children in our Baltimore community. We combine tutoring activities (academic support) with mentoring activities (social support) to provide each student with basic skills needed to achieve success in life. Students are supported in challenging and difficult areas of school, and also have the opportunity to form lasting relationships with caring adults in their local communities. We match each NB student with a volunteer who works with the student in weekly 90 minute tutoring sessions based on an individualized academic plan developed with parental and teacher input. Then we add monthly mentoring activities allow students and volunteers to expand their relationships. These are typically group outings or activities with their families, or more individual activities based on the interests of the student/volunteer pairs, as desired.

Based in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore, NB is an important component of the Martin Pollak Project, a community-centered social service agency that focuses on improving lives of children and families who have experienced trauma and social and economic deprivation. MPP’s larger goal as a community-based organization is to help build a civic culture where all people take more responsibility for one another and for the community as a whole.
