NorthStar Baltimore Tutoring & Mentoring

Northstar Baltimore (NB) is a free one-on-one tutoring/mentoring program that aims to improve academic growth and success and social-emotional development for at-risk children, often from low-income families, in our Baltimore community. The catalyst for this change is a positive, caring relationship with an unrelated adult serving as a tutor/mentor.

Our program combines one-on-one tutoring activities (academic support) with mentoring activities (social support) to provide each student with basic skills needed to achieve success in life. We match each NB student with a volunteer who works with the student in weekly 90-minute tutoring sessions based on an individualized academic plan developed with parental and teacher input. We also provide monthly mentoring activities to allow students and volunteers to further expand their relationships.

For the 2023-2024 school year, Northstar Baltimore is now determining its schedule for tutoring sessions based on student interest and volunteer availability. In recent years, these sessions have typically been on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6-7:30 PM at MPP and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:30-4 PM at two elementary and middle schools in the Highlandtown neighborhood.  Please contact Nancy  (paddennancy@gmail.com) for more details as plans for the new school year are finalized.

Northstar Baltimore has been operating since 2017, serving students in the Highlandtown and Southeast Baltimore neighborhoods, where our program is based.

Because the Martin Pollak Project believe that engaging children, their families, and community members is the best way to produce positive and measurable results for the young people in our communities, we created the NB tutoring/mentoring program to further commit to our neighborhood and its kids.
